Tip From R.J. Ellory

There is no formula for writing a great book. There are no rules. W. Somerset Maugham said there were three, but no-one could agree what they were. A great book is one that you think is great. Write the book that you yourself would like to read, not the book you think others would enjoy. Write what is familiar to you, write what you know, of course, but it’s just as important – if not more so – to write about those things which impassion and intrigue you. Your enthusiasm for your genre and subject matter will shine through in your prose.

R.J. Ellory is the author of the bestselling A QUIET BELIEF IN ANGELS, which was a Richard & Judy Book Club selection in 2008. His work has been translated into over twenty languages and he was awarded the THEAKSTON'S CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR for his recent novel, A SIMPLE ACT OF VIOLENCE.
